Better Leaders

Practical Leadership & Manager Training

Leadership gets harder when the pressure goes up.

Develop the skills to communicate clearly, handle difficult conversations, build trust and lead effectively — even when you’re stressed, uncertain or outside your comfort zone.

Practical, evidence-informed leadership development for managers, team leaders, supervisors and business owners in Queenstown.

Good Leaders Still Get Stuck.

Most leaders already know a lot about what good leadership is supposed to look like.

The challenge is being able to do it when it matters — when someone is underperforming, conflict is building, a decision is unpopular, you’re doubting yourself, or the pressure is on.

Under those conditions, even capable leaders can become reactive, avoid the conversation, micromanage, overthink, shut people down or drift away from the way they actually want to lead.

Better Leaders develops the practical skills to notice those patterns earlier, create more choice, and respond deliberately.

Leaders and managers will be able to:

Lead Under Pressure

Stay clear, present and effective when stress, uncertainty or strong emotions show up.

Have Difficult Conversations

Address problems, give useful feedback and say what needs to be said without unnecessary avoidance or escalation.

Build Trust & Psychological Safety

Create conditions where people can contribute ideas, ask questions, admit mistakes and respectfully disagree.

Develop People

Delegate more effectively, create shared ownership and resist automatically stepping in to solve everything yourself.

Lead With Confidence

Take useful action even when self-doubt, uncertainty or imposter feelings come along for the ride.

Sustain Performance

Build healthier ways of working, recovering and setting boundaries so leadership remains effective over the long term.

HOW THE TRAINING WORKS

Leadership Skills You Can Use When It Gets Difficult.

This isn't about memorising another leadership model or trying to adopt the personality of an “ideal leader”. The training develops practical capabilities that can be used across different leadership situations.

1

Notice

Recognise pressure, emotions, assumptions and automatic leadership habits before they take over.

2

Choose

Get clear about what the situation requires, what matters most and the kind of leader you want to be in that moment.

3

Act

Take the useful next step — whether that's having the conversation, listening properly, setting a boundary, delegating, speaking up or changing course.

Leadership develops through practice. Sessions use real situations, guided exercises, discussion and practical tools that participants can take back into their everyday work.

THE APPROACH AND EVIDENCE

Better Leadership, Grounded in Behavioural Science

The training draws primarily from Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) and decades of behavioural science research into psychological flexibility, wellbeing and effective behaviour.

At the centre of the approach is psychological flexibility — the ability to stay present, adapt and take useful action when pressure, uncertainty and discomfort show up.

For leaders, that matters because knowing what good leadership looks like is only part of the equation.

A leader may know they need to give feedback — and still avoid the conversation.

They may value developing their team — and still take over when they become anxious about the outcome.

They may want open discussion — and still become defensive when someone challenges their decision.

Psychological flexibility helps close the gap between knowing how you want to lead and actually being able to lead that way in the moments that test you.

The training is experiential rather than purely theoretical. Leaders practise noticing what gets in the way, working differently with difficult thoughts and emotions, and taking action that is more aligned with the leader they want to be.
